“Avery rule” not in the 2009 rulebook ?!?
For my take-home exam in my writing journalism class, I have to write 4 different articles on Sean Avery, mostly on his comments regarding his ex and his future in Dallas. I will also talk about most of the headlines he made, because of his acts. I wanted to talk about the “avery rule”, which is suppose to be under Rule 75 – Unsportsmanlike Conduct, but I don’t see it in the 2009 official rulebook ( http://www.nhlofficials.com/images/2009_NHL_Rulebook.pdf ).
Was the rule removed? Or is it under another rule number?
I know that it’s not call the avery rule and that it iss under unsportsmanlike, but I don’t see anywhere under the rule 75 something that says that a player can’t wave his arms/stick in front of the goaltender’s face while facing him.

It’s not called the “Avery rule”……..it was just filed under unsportsmanlike. (it was amended to include his antics).
Some other things which may help you- The Stars have four options with Avery…
The team can just keep him.
The team could keep him away by adding its own suspension on top of the league’s punishment. Or, the club could simply say he is away while undergoing treatment for personality issues he and the league said he needs to address.
The Stars could put Avery on waivers or trade him, but it’s unlikely another team would want to take on a player with his baggage and his contract – $3.5 million this season, $4 million each of the next three years.
He also could be sent to the minors, but Dallas would have to pay his full salary. The team also would owe him all the money if he is cut. So the cheapest alternative might be to wait until the off-season, when he could be bought out for $8 million, or two-thirds of what he is owed.
Really, 5 options I guess because they could put him on waivers and send him to the Minors and then recall him (re-entry waivers) and a team could pick him up for 1/2 and Dallas would be on the hook for half.

“The Avery Rule” is a nickname that goes alongside with the rule. It has some real identity with numbers and letters and whatever. Lots of rules have their nicknames after specific players.

If I’m reading it right, I believe it was an added interpretation of the current rule, so its not found in the rulebook.
